Custom hardscaping in Gallatin
In Gallatin we build stone and paver patios, retaining walls, pool surrounds and walkways, with drainage planned before the first stone is set. The city lies on Station Camp Creek, 3 miles north of the Cumberland River, so where water goes is the first question on any lot.
Is my Gallatin yard in a flood zone?
That depends on the parcel, and it is worth checking before anything is designed near a creek. Our site visit looks at how storm water moves across the lot, and we check the parcel against the flood map. A patio built where water collects needs a different base and slope than one on high ground. Station Camp Creek and the Cumberland River are reasons to look; they don’t settle the question for any one yard.
What goes into a hardscape that lasts?
It starts with base material compacted in layers to suit the soil, then a surface pitched so water runs off, and edges that hold the pavers in place. Retaining walls get drainage behind them, and walkways get the same base as patios, since a path that heaves becomes a trip hazard. Shortcuts in the base show up as sinking pavers within a few seasons, so our custom hardscaping starts underground.
Can you add hardscape around a pool already in the ground?
Yes. A new pool surround, patio or walkway can go around an existing pool once the site visit checks the grade and how the current deck drains. If a pool is still to come, building both together avoids the grade conflicts that separate crews leave behind. The fiberglass pool options are the quickest to install. If covered seating or a kitchen is part of the plan, its footings go in before the paving; that work falls under outdoor living design.
Who permits work in Gallatin?
Gallatin’s Building Codes Department handles city permits; third-party listings place it at 132 W. Main St., Room 202, 615-451-5968. Homes on the streets near Trousdale Place, or out toward Cragfont and Rosemont, start with the same site visit.

Questions, answered
Pools in Gallatin: common questions
How do I know if my yard in Gallatin is in a flood zone?
Check the parcel against the flood map before you design. Gallatin lies on Station Camp Creek, about 3 miles north of the Cumberland River, and lots near a creek can fall inside a mapped flood area. The site visit adds what a map can’t show: where storm water actually runs and pools on your yard.
What hardscaping goes around a pool?
A pool surround: the coping at the water’s edge, a deck or patio wide enough for chairs, walkways back to the house, and often a retaining wall where the yard falls away. Each piece sits on a compacted base with a slope that carries splash and rain away from the shell.
Can you build a new patio around an existing pool?
Yes. A new surround, patio or walkway can be built around a pool that is already in the ground. The site visit checks the existing coping, the grade and how the current deck drains, since the new paving has to meet the pool cleanly and move water away from it.
What does the first site visit cover?
The first visit is the personalized consultation, step one of our four. Angela walks the property with you, talks through what you want, and looks at soil, grade, drainage, equipment access and where utilities and easements run. The design is drawn from what that visit finds.
