Gunite pool construction in Lebanon

In Lebanon we build gunite pools, sprayed and shaped on site, for yards that need a custom outline or a raised spa. The first thing to settle is which side of the city line you are on, because the city and Wilson County permit pools separately.

City or county: who permits a Lebanon pool?

Inside city limits, the City of Lebanon’s Building Inspection office handles it, and its page says it covers the city only. Outside them, Wilson County’s office at 233 E. Gay St., 615-444-3025, takes unincorporated addresses. A Lebanon mailing address doesn’t settle the question, so we check the parcel before design.

What makes gunite worth the longer build?

A gunite pool is steel-reinforced concrete sprayed into a shape drawn for your yard, then finished by hand. Freeform outlines, vanishing edges, raised spas, grottos and beach entries are all on the table. It takes longer than a fiberglass installation, and its interior finish has to be redone eventually.

You can see the kind of shape gunite allows in Cenote Azul, a round spa raised above a freeform pool and spilling into it, on our project gallery. The patio and walls around a Lebanon pool are part of the same contract, so the deck is graded to the finished shell.

The longer schedule has one Tennessee wrinkle. Under the 811 law, digging that runs past 15 calendar days needs a fresh locate notice, and a gunite job can reach that mark. We track the date.

What is the ground like around Lebanon?

Wilson County is limestone-glade country, and Cedars of Lebanon State Park is the best-known glade site nearby. Glades mean thin soil over rock in places, but a backyard can differ from the park. Our visit looks at the soil and reads the grade and drainage before the shell depth is set.

Close to Cumberland University, near the Town Square or out toward Nashville Superspeedway, the steps don’t change: consultation, design, construction and a final walkthrough.

Questions, answered

Pools in Lebanon: common questions

Does the City of Lebanon or Wilson County issue my pool permit?

It depends on the parcel. The City of Lebanon’s Building Inspection office covers city limits only; unincorporated addresses go to Wilson County’s office at 233 E. Gay St., 615-444-3025. A Lebanon mailing address alone doesn’t tell you which one applies, so check the parcel before the plans are drawn.

How long does a gunite pool take to build compared to fiberglass?

Longer. A fiberglass pool is in the ground within days of the dig, while a gunite pool is built in stages on site: the steel, the sprayed shell and then the hand-applied finish. You get a schedule for your gunite pool at the design stage, and regular updates as each stage is completed.

Do I need to call 811 again if digging takes longer than 15 days?

Yes. Under Tenn. Code 65-31-106, work that runs past 15 calendar days needs a new locate notice. The original request has to go in at least 3 working days before digging starts. Gunite jobs can run long enough to reach that mark, so the renewal date belongs on the schedule.

What is a gunite pool made of?

Steel-reinforced concrete. A grid of steel bar is tied in the excavation, concrete is sprayed over it to form the shell on site, and the interior is finished by hand. That is why gunite can take any shape, and why its interior finish eventually needs renewal, which fiberglass does not.
